Detective Elwood "Red" Smith passed on January 13th 2009 at the age of 82 years.  Red was a 30 year veteran of the Rochester Police Department and served in the Patrol Section, K-9 Unit, Special Criminal Investigation Unit, and the Homicide Squad.  Red is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret, his daughter Marie, and sister in law Ursla Favata.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in W.W. II.  during which time he fought in three major battles, receiving the Purple Heart for his injuries. After his discharge from the Navy, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps for four years, and after his discharge from the Army, he became a police officer in 1955, retiring as a Grade B Detective in 1985.   He is a member of the Rochester Police Locust Club, Rochester PBA, and long time member of the ARPALER.

His Funeral service was held at Bartolomeo & Perotto Funeral home 1411 Vintage Lane (near Long Pond Road in Greece) on Thursday January 15th.  His Funeral Mass was held at St. John the Evangelist Church on Friday January 16th.  Interment was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Unity Health Foundation, c/o Park Ridge Living Center, 1555 Long Pond Rd., Rochester, NY 14626.

Anthony J. Volonino passed on Thursday, January 15, 2009. He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Mary Parnofiello Volonino; children, Louis (Kelly), Alice of CA, Daniel & Michael; grandchildren, Daniel Jr., Nicholas, Andrew, Marissa & Kyle; sisters, Mary Volonino, Genevieve (Robert) Doran; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Tony was a graduate of R.B.I. He was a WWII Air Force Veteran and a member of American Legion Post 1182. He served 3 years with the Rochester Police Department and 31 years with the Monroe County Sheriff's Dept. He retired in 1985 with the rank of captain and had the responsibility of the department's records section. He was a past president of the Sheriff's Retirement Assoc. and was a member of the Association of Rochester Police Area Law Enforcement Retirees. He also had chaired the Sheriff's Department United Way Drive for 20 years. He served for 10 years with the Catholic Youth Organization and was a member of the Men's Club of St. Helen's Church. He was a member of the Gates Republican Club and Town & County Committee. He was an active member (since 1982) of the Gates Lions Club, where he was past President, past Vice President, past Secretary, and was currently in charge of Public Relations. Tony was awarded the Dandy Lion Award in 1989 and 1996, and the Melvin Jones Fellowship in 2000.

His service was on Sunday January 18th, 2009 at DiPonzio Funeral Home, Inc., 219 Spencerport Rd., Gates. His Funeral Mass was held on Monday, January 19th at 10:00 AM in St. Helen's Church, 310 Hinchey Rd. Interment, Grove Place Cemetery.

Joel C. Rotunno passed on January 29, 2009. Joel is predeceased by his parents, Charles & Carmella Rotunno; nieces, Susan Taddeo & Lori Fico-Roberts. He is survived by his wife Marsha Hook Rotunno; daughters, Kathleen (Peter) Giacovelli & Karen Rotunno; grandchildren, Matthew Giacovelli & Jacqueline Giacovelli; sisters and brother, Annette Taddeo, Louis (Valerie) Rotunno & Terri Fico; several nieces and nephews. Joel retired from the City of Rochester Police Department and from the East Rochester Police Department, where he served as its Police Chief. Joel was an investigator for the Monroe County Welfare Department. He served as director of Safety & Security for 22 years at Park Ridge Hospital and he was Director of Security for Monroe County.

BARTOLOMEO & PEROTTO Funeral Home, Inc., 1411 Vintage Lane (Between 390 & Long Pond Rd.), where Joel's visitation will be Monday, 2-4 & 7-9. Joel's Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, 9:30 AM at St. Lawrence Church, 1000 N. Greece Rd., followed by his interment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Pittsford: March 12, 2009, at age 84, after a long battle with emphysema. Predeceased by his brother, Eugene S. Wetmore. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Laura; sons, William and Richard; loving grandfather of Tyler and Riley Wetmore; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Philip and Donna Coene; a niece and nephew. Bob served in the 6th US Marine Division of the Pacific Theater during WWII, 1943-1946, and was wounded in Okinawa. He served 2 ½ years with the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and 22 ½ years with the Brighton Police Department and The ARPELER. Bob served as an off ice official for the Rochester Americans Hockey Team for over 42 years. His warmth and love for people will be sorely missed by friends and family.

Rochester:  March 18, 2009.  WWII Veteran of the U. S. Navy, Retired from the Rochester Police Department.  George is survived by his devoted wife: Jessica Cooper; 3 step-children, Thomas (Maxine), Raynald and Samantha Davidson; 8 grand and 3 great-grandchildren 1 brother, Moses M. (Juanita) Cooper, all of Rochester, NY; 1 Aunt; Carrie Marsh of Georgetown, SC; nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, other relatives and friends.  George initially served with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, then transferred to RPD and served in the Patrol Section until he was promoted to Detective and assigned to the License Squad and Homicide.

Raleigh N.C. – Passed on March 18, 2009.  He was predeceased by his mother, Lois C. Reiss in 2001. He is survived by his father George P. Reiss (RPD-Retired Captain) of Raleigh; sons, G. Ryan & Shawn M. Reiss both of Fairport; daughter Kathryn M. Reiss of Rochester; brother Edward Reiss of California; sister Alice (Steve) Fisher of Watertown and Elizabeth (Mark) Siver of Raleigh N.C. numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and friends.

George held several positions in Law Enforcement in Monroe County over 24 year career including Rochester Police Investigator - Rochester Scuba Squad - Sergeant and retired at the rank of Lieutenant.  He was an active member of the Rochester Police Locust Club, The ARPALER and Moose Lodge #1318 of Raleigh N.C.

Rochester: April 23, 2009.  Predeceased by father Raymond Slattery, survived by beloved mother Vera Slattery; children Lynne (James) Ciufo, Kevin (Jill) Slattery, John (Terri) Slattery, Timothy Slattery; brothers Raymond (Myra) Slattery, Dr. Thomas (Nancy) Slattery, Kevin (Sue) Slattery; sister Kathy (John) Thyroff, Karen (Roy) Liddicott; 7 grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  Jack was a retired Rochester City Firefighter and licensed funeral director.  Jack was very instrumental assisting the Alliance with our 20 year fight to obtain a work COLA for police and fire retirees.

Webster: April 27, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Vie; sons, Reid (Elaine) and Rick (Gale); daughter, Sue Mele (Gary Geldorf); grandchildren, Macey and Jason Doe, Amy (Pete) Novack; Stephanie and Stephen Doe; Rachel (Steve) Schubert, Brian (Sandy) and Brad Mele; 8 great-gandchildren.

Norm served as a B25 Pilot during WWII and as a Deputy Monroe County Sheriff for 28 years including service with the Sheriff's Patrol Boat and Helicopter Patrol.
