I am sad to report the passing of retired Irondequoit Sergeant John Gallagher. John passed on Saturday September 9th, 2006. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret. He is survived by his daughters, Geralyn (Robert) Cone and Marybeth (john) Little. Brother Donald (Geraldine) Gallagher; Grandchildren and many neices and nephews.

John was a veteran of WWII. He was also a member of the Irondequoit Police Nightstick Club, Irondequoit PBA, and a life member of the ARPALER.

DETECTIVE JOHN R. CULELLA

I sadly report the passing of retired Rochester Police Detective John R. Culella on Friday September 22, 2006.  John joined the Rochester Police Department after serving with the U.S. Marines in WWII. He then served with the Rochester Police Department for 22 years, 1950 until 1972 and retired with the rank of Detective.

Detective Culella is predeceased by his wife Loretta, and is survived by his very special friend Beverly Currier, two daughters JoAnn (John) Pickard and Christina (Peter) Piampiano, 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren - brother Richard (Betty) Taccone and sister Martha Marian. 

Besides being a long time member of The ARPALER, he was also a member of the Rochester Police Locust Club, the Rochester Police Benevolent Association, Elks Club and Knights of Columbus.   John requested no visiting hours and no service, and will be buried in the National Cemetery in Riverside, California on VanBuren Blvd.  Condolences and sympathy cards can be sent to: Ms. Beverly Currier or the Culella family at 574 Toledo Drive - Hemet CA. 92545.  Memorial donations in his name can be made to a local hospice of your choice.

DETECTIVE MAURY IMPERIAL
Rochester Police Department - Retired

Retired Rochester Police Department Detective Maury Imperial passed away on Saturday October 7, 2006 at the age of 89. Predeceased by his wife Ida, Maury is survived by his daughter, Maureen (Daniel) Corrigan, brother, Ernest (Grace) Imperial, several nieces and nephews.

Maury proudly retired as a Detective with the Rochester Police Department after 24 years of dedicated service. After his retirement, he worked security for 10 years at the YMCA. Maury was a member of the Rochester Police Locust Club, Rochester Police Benevolent Association and a long time member of the ARPALER. Memorial donations may be directed to the YMCA, 444 East Main Street, Rochester, NY 14604.

OFFICER TERRANCE C. VILLNOW

Retired Rochester Police Department Officer Terrance C. Villnow passed away on Saturday October 14, 2006 at the age of 69 years.  Terry was a native of Rochester, formerly of Norfolk, VA, and an eighteen month resident of Brooksville, Florida.  He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, and retired from the Rochester Police Department after 20 years of distinguished police service.  He later became a 911 Officer for the City of Norfolk, where he also served on the Planning and Codes Administration.  He also was employed with the U.S. Investigative Service in Norfolk.  Officer Villnow was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, the Rochester Police Locust Club, and a long time member of the ARPALER. 


Survivors include his wife, Susan; three daughters, Kristin (Kurt) Kumpt of Victor, NY, Amy Villnow

of Fairport, NY - Wendy (Robert) Schwartz of Springfield, MA.  Brother, Robert P. (Delores) Clark

of Virginia Beach, VA; sister, Deborah Clark of Rochester, NY and four grandchildren.

Memorial Services will be conducted at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Spring Hill FL on Friday October 20th, at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the Cremation Garden. 

The family suggests that memorial donations may be made in memory of a loved one to: St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, American Cancer Society, or Hernando Pasco Hospice in Brooksville,
FL.  A graveside service will be held in Rochester on Sat., Nov 4 at 11 A.M. at Mount Hope Cemetary.

SERGEANT LOUIS C. BERTINO

Retired RPD Sergeant Louis Bertino passed on November 1, 2006. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Cleo Bertino. Children Charles “Bo” (Robyn) Bertino; Kathy (Frank) Rossi; Lona (Dave) Sojda; Nine Grandchildren, Seven Great-Grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and close friend Marc Germain.

Lou was a highly decorated Rochester Police Officer. His assignments included Area C, Detective Bureau, and the Tactical Unit. He was honored as Police Officer of the year in 1978. He served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps in WWII. Throughout his career, he was honored and respected by his men.

Lou was awarded many Industrial League MVP’s in basketball and went on to play at the professional level for several years. His greatest gift was his loyalty and generosity to his fellow men as well as his fellow officers. He was a Member of the Rochester Police Locust Club, Rochester Police Benevolent, and long time member of the ARPALER. Donations may be sent to the VFW Post #1457 – 172 Picturesque Drive, Rochester, NY 14616.

ARPALER reports the passing of Retired Greece Police Officer Michael Popowich. Mike passed on Monday November 13, 2006. He is survived by his wife Joan, daughter, Catherine (Tom) Lawson, son, Scott S. Reynolds, seven Grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren; sister Pauline (Frank) Stasiw, sisters in law; Ruth Popowich and Angela Popowich, brother in law Charles E. Kent and several nieces and nephews.

Mike was a U.S. navy Veteran of WWII serving in the Pacific Theatre and retired from the Town of Greece Police after his distinguished service to the community. He was a long time member and supporter of the ARPALER.

His calling hours were Wednesday, Nov. 15 - 4-7 p.m. at Vay-Schleich & Meeson Funeral Home - 1075 Long Pond Road. His funeral service was held iin the Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday at 10 a.m. - Interment was at Riverside Cemetery. Contributions may be made to ARPALER and mailed to 1425 Lexington Avenue - Rochester, NY 14606

I sadly report the passing of Retired Detective Rocco "Rocky" Todisco on December 6, 2006. Rocky was a WWII Army Veteran, Past State Commander of the NYS Italian-American War Veterans, & Past Commander of Post 26, Past Secretary of the Rochester Police Locust Club, and a long time member of the ARPALER.

He is survived by his wife Helen; Children; Rene (Dr. Charles) Gibbs, & Steven (Loni) Todisco; nephew, Larry (Judy) Tedesco; grandchildren, Shannon & Emily Gibbs, Jonathan Lipary, Alex & Anthony Todisco; also nieces, nephews and cousins.

Calling hours will be Saturday and Sunday 1-4 p.m. at Crawford Funeral Home 495 N. Winton Road (between Browncroft & Humboldt St.) His Funeral Mass will be Monday at 11 a.m. at St. John The Evangelist Church 549 Humboldt St. Interment Oakwood Cemetery. OFFICER CHARLES "RED" O'GEEN

I sadly report the passing of Retired LeRoy Police Officer Charles "Red" O'Geen Sr. on Friday December 8th, 2006 at the age of 72.

Officer O'Geen was married for 46 years to Maridee Battaglia O'Geen of LeRoy, who survives with one son: Charles O'Geen Jr. and one daughter; Carol Ann O'Geen. 3 sisters-in-law; 2 brothers-in-law; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Charles was a U.S. Army Veteran who served his country from 1955-1957, a member of St. Joseph's Church, LeRoy American Legion Post #576, St. Nicholas Club in Batavia, and a long time member of The ARPALER. He served with the Town of LeRoy Police Department and retired in 1989 at the age of 55 years after 22 years of dedicated service.

Calling hours will be at Lovria's Memorial Chapel - 36 West Main Street - LeRoy on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. His Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church located on Lake St. in LeRoy. Private Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the LeRoy Volunteer Ambulance fund or the Charity of the donor's choice.

LIEUTENANT MARCELLA (BETTY) SPARKS

I am sad to report the passing of Marcella (Betty) Sparks on Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at the age of 88.

She is predeceased by her husbands Anthony Sparks, Vincent Papaleo and Robert Schneider Sr and her sister Dorothy Finucane.

She is survived by her son, Robert Jr. (Linda) Schneider; daughter, Linda (James) Fahy; Sister, Evelyn (John) DuBois; grandsons, Christopher and Eric Henninger; Niece, Bonnie (Steve) Passero; nephew, John (Sandy) DuBois; several step-children, step-grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.

Marcella was one of the first police women appinted to the City of Rochester Police Department. She served with distinction and reached the rank of Lieutenant during her 20 year career. At the time of her retirement, she held the rank of Lieutenant, assigned as a supervisor in the Clinton Section of the Rochester Police Department.

She retired to Wolcott, NY in 1978. She recently resided at Forest Park Senior Living Center in Victor, NY.

Friends may call Friday 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Lucey-VanVoorhis Funeral Home, 301 West Main St., Victor. Marcella's Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday morning at 9 a.m. at St. Patrick's Church, Victor. Interment - North Wolcott Cemetary. Gifts in her memory may be directed to a charity of your choice.
